The making of an Australian-first documentary on how six Asian international students made Australia home
Sydney (March 10, 2025)
Australian production team FishTalk Social has launched the making of a new six-episode documentary, From Far Away to G'Day that will unveil the trials, tribulations, joys and triumph of Asian immigrants in Australia and to tell the inside stories of their journeys to their dream home.
The documentary will feature six international students who have come to Australia to study, work and live with each episode tracing their lives from the day they arrived in Australia.
It will tell the unheard stories about how they transitioned into their Australian home, overcame challenges, and sought to find a sense of belonging. It showcases how fiercely proud they are about the contributions they have made to Australia’s multicultural society.
Ultimately, it reveals how these extraordinary individuals embrace Australia as the country they have grown to love.
It also aims to reshape the narrative around Asian international students and immigrants amid growing misinformation and disinformation about immigrants to Australia.
"Australia has such extraordinary links with Asia, culturally, economically and emotionally. For Australia to thrive, it is so important that they and all immigrants coming to Australia feel they truly belong,” said From Far Away to G’Day executive producer Steven Yu.
“This documentary hopes to open the eyes of viewers, to the journeys undertaken by these immigrants who have lives, hopes and dreams that are universally shared by all Australians.”
The team behind the documentary comprises experts in journalism, media production, policy, advertising, marketing and most of all, storytelling.
Production will tentatively take a year and is scheduled to start in July 2025. The project is supported by Fish Talk, one of Australia’s largest professional hub for Asian Australians as well as organisations like Documentary Australia, Centre of Stories, and Asian Australian Alliance.
The production team has commenced its casting call for the documentary’s six individuals. Interested candidates should fill out the attached Google form and provide a supporting audio or video recording telling us why you think you would be a great story for this documentary.
